Grief/Bereavement & Life Changes
Grief/Bereavement
Dealing with the loss of a family member, friend or loved one can bring many different emotions, including sadness, anger, confusion, overwhelm and so many others. Grief counselling is designed to help people who are struggling with pain and difficult emotions that come with experiencing loss, whether it be the loss of a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend, or even a pet. Grief counselling can also be helpful for people who are struggling with anticipatory grief, which is the grief that comes with knowing that a loved one will soon pass away.
Whichever type of grief you are experiencing, accessing the support of an experienced therapist can help you gain understanding and guidance through the grief process and assist you as you process and resolve the difficult emotions that accompany grief.
At North Counselling, our experienced therapists provide individual counselling sessions either in person or virtually/online and will work with you to assist you in processing your grief and finding ways to cope with the pain of your loss. Our experienced counsellors also provide education about the grieving process and offer strategies for self-care and stress reduction, based on your needs and desires. Different approaches to counselling, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, EMDR and Internal Family Systems therapy can be helpful to work with the emotions and experiences that come up when we experience grief, and our therapists have training in a wide variety of approaches to help find a counselling approach that works for you.
At North Counselling we have therapists who specialize in working with individuals of all ages (children, teens, adults, seniors) in their journey with grief. Contact us today to get connected with a therapist who can help you with your grief.
Life Changes
Sometimes life brings changes that we know are coming and can prepare for, and other times changes come up that take us by surprise. No matter the stage of life, changes can bring stress, anxiety, anger and many other difficult emotions that we need support with. People seek counselling for many different life changes that can be difficult to navigate on their own. Here are a few examples:
- Relationship Struggles: This can include arguments with a spouse, partner, family members, parents or friends. Dealing with conflict in relationships or even the end of relationships can be difficult and can raise many questions and uncertainty about the future. We help our clients learn effective communication skills to deal with conflict, develop healthy relationship boundaries and process the changes to obtain clarity for their own life.
- Career changes: Sudden changes to our career path (losing your job or being transferred) or even planned changes (job changes, retirement) can cause a lot of confusion, anxiety and stress in our lives. Counselling can help us to process the emotions and stress that can come with these changes, understand our identity beyond our work and careers, explore new opportunities, and develop a plan for the future.
- Health concerns: Sudden changes to our health and physical abilities can be very difficult. These changes can include chronic illnesses, injury, or disability. We help our clients cope with the physical and emotional challenges of these issues, learn how to adjust to these changes in their lives. We also partner with various community supports and assist clients in accessing resources in the community where appropriate.
- Trauma: At some point in our lives, we all experience varying levels of traumatic experiences that impact us: whether you’ve experienced a significant trauma experience such as abuse, witnessed or experienced a violent incident, accident or natural disaster; or perhaps a smaller, seemingly less significant experience that still impacts you. These trauma experiences can shape us and cause us to develop patterns of avoidance, withdrawal, fear of being hurt and we can lash out at our loved ones in anger and/or irritability. At North Counselling, we have therapists that specialize in working with clients who have experienced trauma. We are dedicated to providing a safe space for clients to feel comfortable, and able to deal with the impact of trauma in their lives. Counselling can help to develop an understanding of how your experiences have impacted your life and find ways to cope, process and heal from the trauma that you have experienced.
Whatever the changes are that you may be experiencing in your life, we want you to know that we are here to support you. Please contact us to learn more about the ways that counselling can help you manage the stress or changes that you are experiencing in your life.
